Surround:Visual - A Multimedia/Dance Performance with Live Music

Tonight in Buffalo a true multimedia event is taking place over at Babeville. You can check out the Facebook page for all the info, but here is the quick rundown if you don't already know what's up.

Surround:Visual a Multimedia/Dance Performance with Live Music will feature a total of 25 performers across 3 mediums: dance, video, and music. The performers will present a collaboration that is intended to, from the sound of it, engulf the audience in a sensory overload experience. The audience is in the middle, enclosed by a circle of video projections and surround-sound audio. Dancers will then roam in between the screen and the audience.

There will be two 50-minute improvisational performances.The show is free, but a donation is encouraged.

List of performers:

Dancers: Erin Bahn, Beth Elkins, Nancy Hughes, Angela Lopez, Leanne Rinelli, Bonnie Jean Taylor, and Elyssa Bourke.

Video artists: Cory Gath, Courtney Grim, Carl Lee, Tammy McGovern, Brian Milbrand and Vince Mistretta

Musicians: Jim Abramson, Kathleen Ashwill, Steve Baczkowski, Michael Basinski, Gabe Beam, Kevin Obrien Cain, Jenece Gerber, Mike Kimaid, Keir Neuringer, KG Price and T. Andrew Trump

Both performances are supported in part with funds from the Experimental Television Center’s Presentation Funds which are supported by The New York State Council on the Arts and the Strategic Opportunity Stipends Program through New York Foundation for the Arts and New York State Council on the Arts. The project also received a generous donation of steel from ALP Steel Corp.

Kickstarter for Surrounded:Visual Show

The upcoming Surrounded:Visual event set to take place at Babeville on Wednesday, December 8 needs help raising funds. The Reactionary Ensemble and nimbus dance group are hoping to raise $2,500 in order to meet their needed funding for the event.

Right now they are at $210.

Head over to their Kickstarter page for more details on the event (which sounds fucking awesome, by the way) and what you can get by donating anywhere from $10-$500. Donations as low as $1 can be made as well.

The money will go toward the materials needed for the the screen used in the performance, costumes for the dancers, ultrasonic range sensors and stipends for the artists involved in the project.

Monday, December 6 is the deadline for raising the funds. 

Nat Baldwin at the Vault Tonight

Interesting show tonight at the Vault brought to you by Little Red Booking. Dirty Projectors' member Nat Baldwin will perform with Kurt Weisman (Witch, Feathers) and Travis Laplante (Little Women) opening the show. Tickets are $8. You can get them at Cafe Taza or Spiral Scratch if there are any left. Only 70 were made available.

Intension Quintet Tonight at Shakti Yoga

The Soundscape's favorite local jazz ensemble Intension Quintet has a show tonight over on Grant Street at the Shakti Yoga studio. Performing along with the band will be saxophonist extraordinaire Steve Baczkowski. 

Intension Quintet has a pan-stylistic sound that makes use of forward thinking composition, group improvisation, ambient soundscapes, noise, and electronics. Check out their MySpace page for a sample of their work.

The show will also feature live projections from Chris Svoboda for your viewing pleasure. A sample of Svoboda's live work can be watched below.

 

Opening the show will be Mike Yes Yes Ersing and the Heaven Tongue.

Show starts at 8pm. And if anyone snaps some pictures make sure to upload them to the Soundscape Flickr Group so everyone can see them.

RRIICCEE Preview: DC and Little Rock Show Reviews plus Video

Buffalo's own prodigal son Vincent Gallo returns tonight for a performance with his group RRIICCEE. The show takes place at Soundlab and costs a cool $20 presale. Considering the group records absolutely nothing and very little is on the net to clue you into what you might be in for, I thought I would post a few things to give you an idea of what you MIGHT hear tonight if you decide to head down and check out one of the most controversial artists around today.

For those of you decide not to head down, you can always check out Noise Theater VII that is taking place at the Mickiewicz Theater. This sounds like it will be an equally interesting experience.  Upload some pics to Flickr group for this, too.

Reactionary Ensemble's Surround:Audio Tonight at the Burchfield-Penny Art Center

Interesting FREE event going down tonight at the Burchfield-Penny Art Center.  Audio/visual improvisationalists the Reactionary Ensemble will perform using a hacked Wii remote and Wacom tablet to control audio and video in a venue fitted with surround-sound capability.  

The event will feature musicians Gabe Beam, Kevin O'brien Cain, Jamie Currie, Michael Kimiad, T. Andrew Trump along with KG Price manning the live Wii-mote Room Conduction.

The event's Facebook page says to prepare for the combination of "sound & visuals into a synæsthetic montage that challenges the audience to forge unfamiliar connections and make new correlations — opening a boundless world of unprompted connections existing as a vodoun-esque fabrication of dream-like imaginations."

In other words, hallucinogenic experiences will be provided with cover charge. Oh wait...its FREE!  

Head down to the Burchfield Penny Art Center (1300 Elmwood Ave) at 7 pm.

Enxu recorded this song back in 2006 when he was in China. The name of the group he recorded it with was 心里声学家  (pronunciation: shin lee shung shway jah). Translates to: Psychoacoustics Professor.

A Night of Improvised Music at Spiral Scratch

Below is the info on performers: Forced Collapse (Chris Riggs/Liz Allbee Duo), Fossils, Set, and Air Loom

Oberlin Conservatory of Music graduate Christopher Riggs draws equally from the worlds of Michigan Noise, European Free Improvisation, and his classical training to create a language of effects-pedal-less extended guitar techniques that are uniquely his own. Current collaborations, some of which are documented on his Holy Cheever Church record label, include Ben Hall, Joe Morris, Gino Robair, and John Olson(of Wolf Eyes). As an ...interpreter of contemporary classical music he has performed the music of Olga Neuwirth, Charles Wuorinen, and Elliott Carter. He is currently pursuing his M.A. in music composition under Anthony Braxton at Wesleyan University.

Liz Allbee is a voracious musician whose work spans many genres, encompassing new music, improvisation, electronic composition, Asian folk and pop, noise, minimalist, free jazz and experimental rock. She plays in the pop band Neung Phak, in the experimental Neanderthal troubaduo Marauder and Alibi, and in the Jon Raskin Quartet, and has performed and recorded with a wide array of musicians, including Anthony Braxton, Leo Smith, Rova, Axel Dorner, Mazen Kerbaj, Birgit Uhler, Gino Robair, SFSound, and with members of Caroliner Rainbow and the Sun City Girls.

David Payne began building his Fossils empire back in 2004. Since that time Fossils has colonized the underground circuit with a steady flow of ultra-limited tapes/cdrs, many of them through David's own Middle James Co imprint. The Fossils sound is always one of formless despair. Churning low-grade electronics, primitive tape manipulations, and an aura of stoned reverie are all genuine signatures. (Graham Lambkin, 2010)

Set are a new Buffalo trio featuring Jim Abramson,Tristan Trump and Olivier Delrieu-Schulze. Be prepared for high energy, spontaneous polyrhythmic chaos.

Air Loom are Mike Mahoney and Adam Richards. Late night, beer soaked attic chaos. Messy drones and mounds of exhausted audio tape.
